1953 Austin-Healey ’100S’ Special Test Car Sells For Record $1.3M

For the collectors of vintage automobiles, the year 1953 will always hold a special meaning. From the premium set of collectible classics like the Ferrari Mille Miglia to the Jaguar C-type replica, all of them seem to be on the wanted list of vintage car lovers. Another vehicle, the Austin Healey 100 Special test car has now gone on the auction block, and fetched a record breaking premium pricing of $1.3 million, at an event by Bonhams. Fresh from the barn after 42 years of storage, this car bought with it plenty of racing history, during journeys with drivers like Lance Macklin, Gordon Wilkins and Marcel Becquart.

After staying in the garage for more than 4 decades, this car has once again rekindled the historical journey that it had undergone within this time frame. Many accolades including the 1953 and 1955 Le Mans 24-hour races, along with the Pan Americana Mexico and Bahamas Speed Week adorns the achievements of the car. But it was the 1955 edition of the Le Mans race when destiny took a turn for the worse. The vehicle was rammed rather badly from the rear end by the Levegh’s Mercedes 300SLR, after which the crashed vehicle was impounded by the authorities for many months before being released to the Donald Healey Motoring Company. It was then restored to its former glory yet again for other important events, and finally landed in the hands of the current owner in 1969, after which it remained untouched. The only up gradation which occurred during the period, was the 1954-55 job when the configuration was changed to the ‘100S’ specification. The vehicle in this condition went on the auction block after these years, and fetched the record breaking sum of $1.3 million at the auction at Weybridge, Surrey.

Seems like these oldies do actually get finer with age and a ‘crashing’ history to boast of. Lucky new bidder indeed!
